DRDO’s New Tech Polymeric Membrane Turns Salty Sea Water Into Drinking Water for Coast Guard

DRDO has made a new filter that turns salty sea water into clean drinking water. It will help the Coast Guard at sea and people living on islands and coasts.

DRDO polymeric membrane: DRDO has made a special water-cleaning filter for the Indian Coast Guard. This new filter was made in only eight months by scientists at DRDO’s Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment in Kanpur.

The special thing about this filter is that it can turn salty seawater into clean drinking water, even when ships are sailing deep in the sea. It can help the Coast Guard get safe water while they’re doing their work in the ocean.

This new water filter is made in India, which also matches with the country’s goal of being more self-reliant, especially under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ plan. This new technology is a big win because making clean water from the sea is not easy. Seawater has a lot of salt and other tiny things that can harm normal water filters. Most filters get spoiled fast when used for seawater, but this new one made by DRDO works much better and lasts longer.

DRDO polymeric membrane: How Does it Works?

The filter uses something called a “nanoporous multilayered structure.” That means it has many very tiny holes across different soft plastic layers. These little holes are small enough to let only water go through but block salt and other dirty stuff. This is how the filter makes seawater clean enough to drink.

This new filter is also strong and doesn’t break easily. It can take high pressure, which means it can pull water from deep parts of the ocean where pressure is very high. Most old filters couldn’t handle that and would stop working. But now, Coast Guard ships, even when they are far out at sea, can use this filter to get fresh water without any trouble.

The first test of the filter was done on a Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessel. DRDO said the filter worked perfectly during safety and efficiency checks. The team will now run the system for 500 hours to see how well it performs during long use in real ocean conditions, reports News18. After that, it will be used fully in operations.

Not Just for Defence but for the People Too

Even though this filter was made for the Coast Guard, it can help people who live in far-away coastal areas and islands too. These places often don’t have clean water. DRDO believes this same filter can be used there with a few small changes. If this happens, people in these areas won’t have to worry so much about getting safe water.

Some experts believe this new filter can do more than just help the military. It can help build a new way of giving clean water to small villages and far places without needing big machines or foreign help. It may also save money in the long run because India won’t need to buy this kind of technology from other countries.
