DRDO Defence Communication Technology: Why SDR and CTCS Trials are Important for India’s Defence

DRDO’s successful tests of SDR and CTCS show big progress in secure, made-in-India military communication. These systems will help soldiers stay connected in tough areas where normal networks don’t work.

DRDO Defence Communication Technology: The Defence Electronics Application Laboratory (DEAL), which is a part of the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), has finished field trials for two important systems that could help the Indian defence forces in a big way. These two systems are a small-sized Software Defined Radio (SDR) and a Compact Transhorizon Communication System (CTCS). Both are meant to improve how the Army, Navy, and Air Force talk to each other in serious, mission-related situations.

These trials happened in different places with different types of land and weather. The goal was to see how the systems work in real-life conditions. Experts checked every important part of the systems during the testing to make sure everything matched what the defence forces need in the field.

“Both the systems demonstrated robust and reliable performance meeting the user defined operational benchmarks. The milestone reinforces the commitment of DRDO in developing indigenous and mission critical communication solution for national security,” the DRDO said in a social media post.

The SDR is a special radio made in India. It helps with safe voice and data communication. It works with both old and new communication systems. This makes it useful for the Navy and also for field soldiers.

DRDO said, “SDR is a secure indigenous system with legacy communication support and secure digital voice/data communication for Naval application with 3 channel (2V/UHF band and 1 HF band), 4-channel (2V/UHF band and 2L-band) for Tactical Communication and single channel operation in V/UHF (Manpack role) and UHF band (Handheld role).” That means this radio can be used in many ways on ships, by troops carrying it, or even in handheld mode and it keeps messages safe and encrypted.

On the other hand, CTCS helps send information across very far distances, especially in places where there are no regular phone or internet networks. This is useful in faraway and rough areas where soldiers are posted and need to stay in touch with their teams. The CTCS is what DRDO described as a “large hop terrestrial backhaul communication system” that makes sure users get high-speed data in remote stations. The organisation said that “this system can be used in remote locations where civil communication grid is not present.”
