India T-90MS: India is pushing hard to update its armoured fleet, and the work is now centered on the Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) and the future Main Battle Tank plan, also called FMBT. The Indian Army wants to replace its old T-72 tanks with a newer and stronger system. In September 2024, the Defence Acquisition Council cleared the plan to buy 1,770 FRCVs. The ministry said the new tank will bring better mobility, stronger protection, more firepower, and real-time battlefield awareness. The project is being taken ahead under the Make-I route, which supports Indian defence building with government backing.
The FRCV is meant to be a modern main battle tank for the next phase of Indian armoured warfare. It is expected to work in tough terrain and carry advanced systems for protection and combat. Official defence documents also show that the FRCV is being treated as a long-term replacement for the T-72 fleet. This makes the programme one of the most important tank projects in India’s current defence modernisation drive.

Russia’s T-90MS Offer
Russia has now come forward with a new offer for India. Rosoboronexport has proposed joint production of the T-90MS main battle tank in India. The idea is not just to send finished tanks. The plan also includes transfer of technology, local production of key parts, and a gradual move toward more Indian-made components. Reports say the work could begin with technology kits and then slowly shift into fuller local manufacturing.
Russia believes it has an edge because India already has a big base of Russian-origin tanks such as the T-72 and T-90. That means India already has repair systems, maintenance units, trained staff, and spare-part networks in place. This could make production faster and cheaper than starting a completely new tank line from zero. The long history of India-Russia tank cooperation also makes the proposal easier to fit into India’s Make in India plan.
What the T-90MS Brings?
The T-90MS is the export version of Russia’s T-90 family. It is reported to use a 1,130-horsepower engine and comes with improved armour, a modern fire-control system, thermal imaging, and digital battlefield management features. Russian sources also describe it as a more advanced and more survivable tank than older versions. Because of these upgrades, Russia is pitching it as a strong option for current battlefield needs.

India’s FMBT plan is different from the FRCV plan. The FMBT is being seen as a future indigenous tank project, with DRDO-linked work already showing up in official materials as an upcoming fourth-generation main battle tank. It is expected to focus on advanced protection, better crew safety, and next-generation combat systems. In simple words, the FRCV is the near-term replacement path, while the FMBT is the bigger future idea that India wants to build more on its own.
