Rotating Detonation Engine India: India has taken a big step in defence and aerospace work. A defence startup named D-Propulse has tested the country’s first indigenous 5 kN air-breathing rotating detonation engine. The engine was shown in a hot-fire test at a DRDO facility and it gave a steady 5 kN thrust. That test pushed the engine to Technology Readiness Level-5, which means it has moved beyond a lab idea and has now been checked in a more real and practical testing setup.
D-Propulse is incubated at IIT Madras. The company has worked on this engine with an aerospike nozzle, which is also an important part of the design. The test is being seen as a strong sign that India is building better next-generation propulsion systems on its own.

How the Engine works?
A rotating detonation engine, or RDE, is not like a normal jet engine. Instead of using the usual kind of burning, it uses pressure-gain combustion. Inside the engine, detonation waves keep moving around in the combustion chamber. This helps the engine use fuel in a smarter way.
Because of this, the engine can give better efficiency, more thrust with less fuel, and also use fewer moving parts. That means the whole design can become simpler and lighter. The company says this kind of engine can be very useful for advanced defence and aerospace use.
The aerospike nozzle is another key part of the system. It is made to stay efficient at different heights. Regular bell-shaped nozzles work best only at some altitudes. But an aerospike nozzle adjusts better as air pressure changes. That makes it more useful for fast flying defence systems.
How India will Benefit from this Engine?
D-Propulse says this new engine may give 15% to 25% better thermodynamic efficiency than normal air-breathing propulsion systems. The company also says it can be made with precision machining instead of complex turbine assemblies. That can lower cost and also save time during production.

The test also marks a shift from lab work to a more complete prototype. The company now wants to build a flight-ready rotating detonation engine by December 2027. That is the next big goal in the programme.
The possible uses are also important. This engine may be used in cruise missiles, target drones, high-speed unmanned aerial vehicles, and other future air-breathing defence systems.
