Shaurya Vijay Yatra for Kargil heroes: India has started the Kargil Vijay Diwas 2026 celebrations with the launch of the Shaurya Vijay Yatra. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh flagged off the special motorcycle expedition from the National War Memorial in New Delhi on July 14. The journey will continue for 13 days and will end at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh, on July 26. This is the day when India celebrates its victory in the 1999 Kargil War.
The Shaurya Vijay Yatra has been organised to honor the brave soldiers who fought for the country during the Kargil War. The official motto of the expedition is “One Ride, One Nation, One Salute.”

The motorcycle expedition has 28 riders. The group includes serving defence personnel, retired soldiers, and some of their family members. During the next 13 days, they will ride almost 1,900 kilometres through the difficult roads and mountains of northern India before reaching Dras.
The journey is not just a bike ride. It has been planned to remember the soldiers who gave their lives during the Kargil War. Along the way, the riders will spread the message of patriotism and remind people about the sacrifices made by the Indian Armed Forces. The Ministry of Defence has said the yatra also aims to keep the memories of Operation Vijay alive and inspire young Indians to serve the nation with dedication.
Heroes of Kargil
While flagging off the expedition, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the courage shown by Indian soldiers during the Kargil War. He said they fought in extremely difficult conditions at very high altitudes where temperatures dropped below minus 40 degrees Celsius. Even in those harsh conditions, the soldiers captured enemy-held mountain peaks and protected the country’s honour.
He said India’s victory in Kargil showed the country’s strong determination to defend its sovereignty, identity, and national honour. He also thanked every soldier who took part in the operation and remembered those who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.
The Defence Minister also paid tribute to the Param Vir Chakra awardees who became symbols of bravery during the war. These include Captain Vikram Batra, Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, Subedar Major (Honorary Captain) Yogendra Singh Yadav (Retd), and Subedar Major (Honorary Captain) Sanjay Kumar (Retd). He said their courage continues to inspire India’s youth and future generations.
War memorials
During the journey, the participants will visit several important military memorials to pay their respects to fallen soldiers. These include Chandimandir War Memorial, Rezang La War Memorial, and Leh War Memorial.
The riders will also meet Veer Naris, the wives of soldiers who lost their lives while serving the country. The meetings are meant to honour their strength, courage, and sacrifice.
Another special part of the expedition is an urn carrying sacred soil from the National War Memorial in New Delhi. This soil will be taken to the Kargil War Memorial in Dras and offered there as a mark of respect. It represents the bond between today’s generation and the brave soldiers who laid down their lives for India.

Senior military leaders join the ceremony
Several top defence officials attended the flag-off ceremony. These included Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani, Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth, and other senior officers.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the Shaurya Vijay Yatra is meant to preserve the legacy of Operation Vijay and remind people of the courage, the duty, the honour, and selfless service shown by India’s soldiers.
