Indian Navy Studies UAV and eVTOL AWACS to Replace Ka-31 Fleet

The Indian Navy is exploring carrier-based UAVs and eVTOL aircraft with advanced AESA radars to replace ageing Ka-31 helicopters, boosting airborne surveillance and strengthening future naval operations from aircraft carriers.

Indian Navy Ka-31 Fleet: The Indian Navy is now looking at new airborne early warning options for its aircraft carriers. The list includes High Altitude Long Endurance, or HALE, drones and electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing, or eVTOL, aircraft. The main goal is simple. The Navy wants a better way to watch the sea and spot danger from the air, while slowly moving away from its old Russian-made Ka-31 helicopters. Reports say the service is studying unmanned systems that can carry modern Active Electronically Scanned Array, or AESA, maritime radars and give long, steady cover to carrier strike groups.

Why the Old Helicopter is Not Enough?

Right now, the Ka-31 is still the Indian Navy’s only carrier-based airborne early warning platform. It uses the E-801M Oko radar, which is mounted under the helicopter’s body and can scan a wide area for low-flying aircraft, cruise missiles, and ships. That makes it very useful for ships at sea, because it sees threats farther than ship radars alone can see. But the fleet is small and getting old. Maintenance is getting harder, spare parts are not easy to manage, and the Navy needs something that can stay ready for longer and work more smoothly in the future.

The Navy has also usually liked larger airborne early warning aircraft, because they can carry stronger radars, more crew, and stay in the air longer. The problem is that normal fixed-wing AEW aircraft need catapults to launch and arresting gear to land. India’s aircraft carriers, INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya, do not have that setup. They use a ski-jump style deck, so the Navy cannot simply add a standard catapult-based AEW plane without major changes. This is why unmanned ideas are getting more attention now.

What the Navy is Studying?

One idea under study is a HALE drone that can stay in the air for a very long time and keep watching large parts of the Indian Ocean. If such a drone carries an AESA radar, it could give the Navy real-time battle awareness and help guide ships and aircraft during carrier operations. Another idea is to use eVTOL platforms.

These are still being built mainly for civilian travel and logistics, but defence planners think the same basic technology may be turned into a military tool later on. One concept being watched closely is an autonomous eVTOL carrying a compact maritime radar so it can work like a small flying guard post with other unmanned assets.

The bigger dream is a network made of many small systems instead of one large aircraft. In that kind of setup, drones could share sensor data through secure networks and work together like a team. That would make the system harder to break and less dependent on any single aircraft. It also fits the wider global move toward distributed maritime operations, where manned and unmanned systems are mixed together to improve sea surveillance.

HAL’s DBMRH Plan

Even with all this drone interest, the Navy still wants an Indian-made helicopter answer in the long run. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is developing the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter, or DBMRH, for the Navy. HAL says the 12.5-ton class DBMRH is being built with blade folding for ship-deck use. Defence planners believe that this helicopter could one day become the base for a special AEW version fitted with an indigenous maritime radar.
