Sri Lankan Navy Injuring Fishermen: India has lodged a strong protest with Sri Lanka after the Sri Lankan Navy fired at an Indian fishing boat near Delft Island early Tuesday morning, injuring 5 fishermen. 2 of them suffered serious injuries and are being treated at Jaffna Teaching Hospital, while other 3 received minor injuries. The incident occurred while the Sri Lankan Navy was reportedly trying to detain the fishermen.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned Sri Lanka’s Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi to express India’s concerns. “The Sri Lankan acting high commissioner in New Delhi was called in today morning to the Ministry of External Affairs, and a strong protest was lodged over the incident,” the MEA stated, according to India TV.

Outlining the details, the MEA said, “An incident of firing by the Sri Lankan Navy during the apprehension of 13 Indian fishermen in the proximity of Delft Island was reported in the early hours of this morning.” they confirmed, “Out of the 13 fishermen who were on board the fishing vessel, two have sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.”
Indian officials acted swiftly, with representatives in Jaffna visiting the injured fishermen at the hospital to ensure their well-being. The Indian High Commission in Colombo also raised the matter with Sri Lanka’s foreign ministry, calling for strict adherence to existing agreements between the two nations. The MEA said, “The use of force is not acceptable under any circumstances whatsoever. Existing understandings between the two governments in this regard must be strictly observed.”
