India Three-Stream Adaptive Engines: India is now thinking past the AMCA engine plan and is also looking at a three-stream adaptive engine as a future option for combat aircraft. In very simple words, this kind of engine can send air through different paths and change how it works based on the job. That means it can give more power in a fight, save fuel on long trips, and also help with cooling. In fighter jets, cooling matters a lot because many new systems make a lot of heat. GE Aerospace describes the “third stream” idea as extra cooled air that helps with propulsion, fuel use, and thermal control.

GTRE, which is DRDO’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment in Bengaluru, is the lab that works on military jet engines for India. DRDO says GTRE’s main job is to design and develop gas-turbine engines for military use and also build the test and production setup needed for full engine development. In February 2026, the Defence Minister visited GTRE and reviewed indigenous engine work there. The official release said, “Govt is committed to achieving self-reliance in aero engines development” and also said, “Now, the time has come to complete those efforts.”
What are Three-Stream Adaptive Engines?
A three-stream adaptive engine is being talked about because future warplanes will need more than speed alone. They will also need power for AESA radars, electronic warfare gear, AI-based mission computers, sensors, and even future weapons that use heat or power heavily. The extra airstream can help manage that heat while keeping the jet strong and fast. That is the simple reason adaptive engines are getting so much attention around the world. GE’s public material on adaptive-cycle engines says the third stream improves cooling, fuel efficiency, and mission-system power.
The basic idea is easy to understand. A normal fighter engine has less flexibility. An adaptive engine can act a bit like a smart engine.

How it connects to AMCA and India’s plans
The AMCA program is India’s fifth-generation stealth fighter project. DRDO notes that the current plan is for a 25-tonne twin-engine aircraft. The Mk1 version is planned with the GE F414 98 kN engine, while the Mk2 is planned with a 110 kN engine to be co-developed with Safran of France. Recent DRDO and PIB updates also say the government is pushing harder on next-generation and even sixth-generation engine work.
GTRE is already looking at indigenous engine work, the Kaveri engine and its derivatives, and future AMCA-class engine technologies. DRDO’s own 2026 newsletter says engine technologies for AMCA-class engines were shown during the minister’s visit, and a February 2026 DRDO note says the new engine being discussed would look at thrust of almost 120 kilo-newton, with the old Kaveri engine now being adapted for the Ghatak UCAV.
