India and Indonesia BrahMos Deal: India has secured an agreement to export BrahMos missiles worth approximately ₹3,800 crore (USD 450 million) to Indonesia, signaling a major step forward in defense collaboration between the two nations.
The BrahMos missile system, a joint India-Russia venture, has gained global attention, with countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, and Middle Eastern nations also showing interest. Deliveries of the missile to the Philippines, which placed an order worth over USD 335 million, are already underway.

During recent meetings, senior officials from Jakarta expressed interest in cooperating on aircraft carrier construction. Notably, India is one of the few countries capable of building aircraft carriers indigenously.
Secretary (East) of the Ministry of External Affairs, Jaideep Mazumdar, highlighted this collaboration, saying, “The defense industry cooperation is one of the important areas that was mentioned. Everything from joint exercises to far greater coordination and collaboration to greater training exchanges, as well as repair and maintenance of common platforms, was discussed.”
Prime Minister Modi underscored the importance of regional security and collaboration, stating, “Indonesia is our important partner in the ASEAN and Indo-Pacific region. We both are committed to maintaining peace, security, prosperity, and a rules-based order in this entire region. Freedom of navigation must be ensured in accordance with international laws.”

India and Indonesia signed MOUs in five areas, including health, maritime cooperation, traditional medicine, digital development, and cultural exchange. Both nations also agreed to strengthen ties in energy, critical minerals, and science and technology. Indian officials are exploring opportunities to enhance shipbuilding cooperation with Jakarta, further cementing the partnership.
President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia, accompanied by a high-level delegation, visited India from January 23-26 as the Chief Guest for the 76th Republic Day celebrations. The visit emphasized the shared commitment to fostering a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
