Honorary Commissions for Republic Day 2025: The Ministry of Defence has announced the list of military personnel set to receive honorary commissions on Republic Day 2025.
According to an official draft gazette notification, the President of India has approved these honorary commissions. The notification states, “The president is pleased to award the honorary commission to the rank of honorary captain/lieutenant on the eve of Republic Day 2025 to the under-mentioned honorary lieutenants/JCOs on the active list under Para 177 of Regulation for the Army, 1987, with effect from January 26, subject to the individual not being under any disciplinary action and satisfactory continued performance.”

The list names the personnel chosen for these honours, organized by unit. In the category of “To be Honorary Captain (on Active List),” the Armoured Corps selects 12 personnel. Among them are Ris Maj & Hony Lt Bharat Bhushan, Ris Maj & Hony Lt Dinesh Kumar, and Ris Maj & Hony Lt Parmajit Singh.
The honours also include personnel from various units, including the Regiment of Artillery, Army Air Defence, Corps of Engineers, Corps of Signals, Parachute Regiment, Grenadiers, Maratha Light Infantry, Army Medical Corps, Corps of Military Police, and the Territorial Army.
Under the category of “To be Honorary Lieutenant (on Active List),” 53 personnel from the Armoured Corps have been named. According to ET, the list also includes individuals from other units such as the Regiment of Artillery, Army Air Defence, Corps of Engineers, Corps of Signals, Parachute Regiment, Grenadiers, Madras Regiment, Rajputana Rifles, Sikh Regiment, and Garhwal Rifles.
In addition to these active-duty honours, the Defence Ministry has issued draft notifications for honorary ranks granted upon retirement. One list, titled “To be Honorary Captain (on Retirement),” awards the honorary rank to retired personnel, effective from the specific dates listed next to their names. Another list, titled “To be Naib Risaldar/Subedar (on Retirement),” grants these ranks to retired personnel, starting from their respective dates.

The draft gazette for retired personnel also states, “The president is pleased to grant honorary ranks to the under mentioned honorary lieutenants and JCOs on the eve of Republic Day 2025 on retirement under Para 179 of the Regulation for the Army, 1987, with effect from the dates shown against their names.”
A defence official explained that once the honorary commissions are granted, the awardees’ uniforms and insignia will be updated to display their newly assigned ranks. This symbolic recognition highlights the dedication and service of these personnel to the nation.
