BrahMos 1500-km Variant: India’s BrahMos missile is now being talked about in a bigger way because a 1,500-km version is being explored in the long-term plan of BrahMos Aerospace. This is still only a concept and not a weapon in production. The idea is to make the missile go much farther while still keeping the same fast strike power that BrahMos is known for. If this future version happens, it could let the Indian Armed Forces attack key targets from a much safer distance.
BrahMos is already one of India’s best-known missiles. It is a joint India-Russia supersonic cruise missile built by BrahMos Aerospace. The company says the system is already in service with the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force. It can be launched from land, sea, submarines, and fighter aircraft. BrahMos Aerospace also describes it as a precision strike system for ships, coast targets, and land missions.

How BrahMos has Upgraded over time
The BrahMos range has changed a lot over the years. The original version was kept near 290 km for a long time. BrahMos Aerospace still lists the ship-based system at up to 290-km on its site. After India joined the Missile Technology Control Regime, the missile family got more room for range growth, and later reports said longer-range versions were being tested. In October 2025, reports said an 800-km BrahMos version was under testing and could be inducted later.
The draft idea of a 1,500-km BrahMos sits beyond those current versions. That is why it matters so much. It would sit closer to a strategic strike weapon than a normal tactical missile. It could give India more reach, more safety for aircraft and troops, and more room to hit important targets without moving too close to enemy defenses.

What else is BrahMos Aerospace Working on?
BrahMos Aerospace is not only thinking about longer range. It is also working on BrahMos-NG, which the company says is a smaller, lighter, smarter, and stealthier version of the current missile. The official BrahMos page says the NG version is still on the drawing board, and the first prototype is planned for air-launched use on the Su-30MKI before later moving to other platforms.
The company also says it is looking at BrahMos-II, a future hypersonic concept. At the same time, DRDO has already tested a separate long-range hypersonic missile in November 2024, and PIB said that missile is designed for ranges greater than 1,500 km.
