Wave Motion Funding: Wave Motion has announced additional funding of $1.6 million to provide the next tactical indirect fire capability for the US Army.

A recent news release from the American startup stated that it is developing and testing a version of its jet gun technology in collaboration with the DEVCOM Armaments Center of the Army.

The jet of supersonic gas that a jet gun fires can accelerate a bullet to its target at extremely high speeds.

The system can be 90% smaller than traditional rockets or cannons of comparable force since there is no physical framework or barrel around the missile.

“The projectile is placed in front of the nozzle, receiving a force that quickly accelerates the payload,” claims Wave Motion. “The jet is under expanded, unlike a rocket engine, to produce a longer stream of supersonic gas.”

First Money
Wave Motion was awarded $1.3 million initially in 2022 to advance the barrel-less launcher technology.

After winning the US Army’s xTech Pacific competition, the company was able to advance the development of its weapon prototype the following year.

According to The Defense Post, the weapon showed some interesting features during the event, such as the ability to fire different bullets without being limited to a certain calibre.

With its creative architecture, Wave Motion’s Jet Gun technology has demonstrated potential in effectively accelerating projectiles to high speeds. Because there is no actual barrel around the projectile, the system is more flexible and small, which makes it appropriate for a range of uses where conventional launch systems might not be practical.

The weapon is 50% lighter than previous indirect fire capabilities to further facilitate the transportation of many guns at once.

Beyond military uses, Wave Motion is investigating the applicability of Jet Gun technology in industrial fields, including drilling and mining. By boosting productivity and cutting expenses, the capacity to fire projectiles with great accuracy and speed can completely change these sectors.

The company’s emphasis on creating a more sophisticated Jet Gun for use in space launches shows how flexible and adaptable the technology is in many industries and how widely it may be used in the future. As a major participant in the creation of state-of-the-art launch technologies, Wave Motion is committed to innovation and cooperation with government agencies and business partners.
