Roketsan Defence Contract With Azerbaijan

Roketsan Defence Contract With Azerbaijan: Türkiye’s Roketsan has signed a contract with Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defence Industry for the BARBAROS coastal defence missile system. The deal was announced during ADEX 2026 in Baku. The defence exhibition was held from September 30 to October 2, 2026.

With this agreement, Azerbaijan has become the first foreign customer for BARBAROS. The system is made to protect coastlines from enemy ships. It uses mobile missile launchers that can move to different locations when needed.

BARBAROS was developed as a flexible system that can use different missiles based on the target and required range. It can also work with radar and other surveillance systems to find and track targets before an attack.

ATMACA And ÇAKIR Give BARBAROS Two Ranges

The BARBAROS setup can carry two types of Roketsan missiles. The longer-range part uses ATMACA anti-ship missiles. Roketsan lists ATMACA with a range of 250 km and a 220 kg warhead. It also has onboard guidance systems and an active radar seeker.

The second part uses ÇAKIR cruise missiles. Roketsan lists ÇAKIR with a range of more than 150 km. Its surface-launched version has also been tested from a mobile 8×8 truck against land and sea targets. A launcher vehicle can be set up with:

  • ATMACA: Four missiles per launcher
  • ÇAKIR: Six missiles per launcher

The system can also use coastal surveillance radar and other ISR assets such as UAVs for finding and tracking targets. BARBAROS is designed to move from one position in less than five minutes, giving it better mobility along the coast.

The BARBAROS contract is part of a wider package of Turkish-Azerbaijani defence agreements worth more than $500 million. The deals also cover companies such as TUSAŞ, ASELSAN and BAYKAR. They include 14 HÜRKUŞ-II aircraft, ALP-100 radar cooperation, MIZRAK smart loitering munitions and ANTIDOT systems.

Roketsan is also increasing its production work inside Azerbaijan through AZROKSAN. Roketsan CEO Murat İkinci said the company plans to start production after the new facilities are completed, with 122 mm rockets coming first. AZROKSAN has also reported that assembly of AZ-122 rockets has already started in Azerbaijan.
