New Zealand Strengthens Defence with Local Uncrewed Tech Partner Syos Aerospace

The New Zealand Defence Force has selected Syos Aerospace to supply advanced uncrewed drones, boats, and ground vehicles, boosting its modern defence.

New Zealand Syos Aerospace: Syos Aerospace is going to give many new uncrewed systems to the New Zealand Defence Force. These are machines that do not need a pilot or driver inside them. They can fly, move on land, or travel on water by remote control or by using smart computer systems.

New Zealand’s defence minister Judith Collins said this is important for the country. She explained why buying from local companies helps. She said, “Having cutting-edge drone technology developed and supported by local businesses will reduce supply chain risk and strengthen our resilience,”.

Syos is based in Mount Manganui on New Zealand’s North Island. The company also works in the UK. It focuses on building advanced drones and robotic systems that can be used by the military.

SA2 and SA7 Drones

One of the drones being supplied is called the SA2. Syos describes its SA2 vehicle as an “autonomous heavy-lift mini-copter used for advanced tactical ISR [intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance”. This means it is a strong quadcopter that can fly by itself and carry equipment. It is mainly used to watch areas from the sky and collect information. It has a special camera system called an electro-optical and infrared sensor. This helps it see clearly during the day and also at night.

Another bigger drone is the SA7. This one can do more heavy work and can carry items weighing over 7kg, which is about 15lb. It can drop supplies to soldiers or carry gear in tough places. It can also be used as a “one-way effector”. That usually means it can be sent on a mission where it does not return, like delivering an explosive payload.

Ground Vehicles and Extra Support

The company will also supply SM300 uncrewed boats. These boats are already being used by Ukraine’s armed forces. They can travel on water without a crew on board. They can be used for patrol missions or other military tasks.

The deal also includes SG400 ground vehicles. These are robotic vehicles that move on land without a driver inside. They can carry equipment or help in risky operations.

The agreement was announced on 26 February. Along with the machines, Syos will also give extra help to the military. The company will provide “specialist services to the NZDF Capability Branch to enable advanced testing and capability through structured experimentation, evaluation, and development” and will also offer operational support and training for personnel.

Syos chief executive Sam Vye spoke about the partnership. He said, “We’re delighted to support the New Zealand Defence Force and are well-positioned to support its strategic priorities,”. He also added, “Our expertise in hardware, uncrewed technologies, and AI-enabled autonomy ensures we can provide scalable, affordable, mission-ready solutions that deliver real operational advantage,”.
