Why India Is Paying Attention to US Boeing P-8 Poseidon Deployments in the Strait of Hormuz

India is closely monitoring the deployment of Boeing P-8 Poseidon by the United States Navy near the Strait of Hormuz, as regional tensions could impact trade routes and maritime security.

US Boeing P-8 Poseidon: When people talk about powerful sea patrol aircraft, the Boeing P-8 Poseidon is always near the top. It is used by the United States Navy for watching oceans, tracking submarines, and doing long missions over water. Many experts call it one of the best multi-mission aircraft in the world today. Boeing says more than 170 P-8 aircraft are flying right now. Together they have crossed over 700,000 flight hours.

Recently, the aircraft made headlines after reports said a US Navy surveillance plane was seen flying near Iran’s Bandar Abbas port and Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. According to Flightradar24, two P-8A planes took off early Sunday from Sheikh Isa Air Base and headed toward the Gulf area. The region is very sensitive because it is an important global trade route.

If tensions grow in the area, experts believe Iran could try to block the Strait of Hormuz using naval mines and submarines. Iran is believed to have around 30 submarines that can operate in shallow waters. The P-8 is built for such situations. It can search for submarines and even small boats and is known for strong anti-submarine work.

What Makes the P-8 So Powerful

The P-8 Poseidon can do many jobs. It handles anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance, maritime awareness, and even search and rescue. The US Navy started using the P-8A in 2013. It replaced the older P-3C Orion aircraft.

India also uses a special version called the P-8I. The Indian Navy calls its fleet “Neptune” and operates 12 of these aircraft. Recently, India cleared a plan to buy six more P-8I jets. These planes help India monitor the Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal, and Arabian Sea, especially because of Chinese submarines in the region.

Important Features

  • It has a wingspan of 37.64 metres and is 39.50 metres long.
  • It stands 12.83 metres tall.
  • 2 CFM-56-7BE engines power it, and each engine gives 27,300 pounds of thrust.
  • It can travel 1,200 nautical miles and stay in the air four more hours while on duty.
  • It can fly as fast as 907 km/h and reach a height of 12,496 metres.
  • The P-8 can carry 129A-size sonobuoys, Harpoon missiles, and MK-54 torpedoes.
  • It also has safety kits for the crew.
  • Its advanced sensors help it search, detect, track, and even attack sea targets. Boeing says its systems are built for real combat patrol missions.

In 2020, a P-8A from the US 7th Fleet helped find a missing fishing boat near Saipan. This showed it can also help in rescue work. It has also been used to watch China’s island-building work in the Spratly Islands.

The aircraft carries almost 34 tonnes of fuel inside. This allows it to fly more than 2,000 kilometres from base for low-level anti-submarine missions. It can also refuel in the air with a KC-30A tanker aircraft.

The P-8 is based on the Boeing 737-800ERX passenger plane but changed for military use. In 2024, the US Navy gave a contract to L3Harris Technologies to upgrade and maintain 139 P-8A aircraft.
