US to Leave NATO: US to Leave NATO Billionaire Elon Musk has voiced support for the United States leaving NATO, saying it doesn’t make sense for America to pay for Europe’s defence. On March 9, Musk responded to a post on his social media platform, X, which urged the US to “Exit NATO now!” Musk replied, “We really should.”

Earlier, on March 3, Musk agreed with a conservative commentator who suggested the US should leave both NATO and the United Nations. His comments come at a time when NATO, which will mark its 76th anniversary in April, faces uncertainty about its future.

Former US President Donald Trump has also been critical of NATO. On March 6, NBC reported that Trump discussed reducing US involvement in NATO unless member countries spend more on their own defence. Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “If they don’t pay, I’m not going to defend them. No, I’m not going to defend them.”

Europe has relied heavily on the US for military support since the Cold War. This includes communications, intelligence, logistics, and leadership. To address this, European Union leaders recently met in Brussels to discuss increasing defence spending. They proposed loans of up to €150 billion (S$216.22 billion) and plans to allow countries to spend €650 billion on defence over four years without penalties.

What If the US Leaves NATO?

If the US withdraws from NATO, it could have serious consequences. According to Mint, Michèle A. Flournoy, a former US government official, called it “one of the most damaging things that any president could do to US interests.” Retired Admiral James G. Stavridis said it would be “a geopolitical mistake of epic proportion.”

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has reassured that the US remains committed to the alliance. However, Ukrainian President Zelensky warned that if the US leaves, “The risk that Russia will occupy Europe is 100 percent.”

What Is NATO?

NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was founded in 1949 with 12 member countries, including the US. Today, it has 32 members, with Finland and Sweden being the latest to join. According to NATO’s website, its purpose is to guarantee the freedom and security of its members through political and military means.

NATO’s main goal is to prevent conflict and promote peace. If diplomacy fails, NATO can use military power to manage crises. This is based on Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which states that an attack on one member is an attack on all.

Ukraine’s membership in NATO has been a sensitive issue. Russia opposes it, fearing NATO forces would get too close to its borders. Former US President Trump also supported Russia’s stance, saying Ukraine could “forget about” joining NATO. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has even said he would give up his presidency if it meant Ukraine could join NATO.
