China Nuclear Talks: China is set to host important talks with Russia and Iran in Beijing this week to discuss Iran’s nuclear program. The meeting comes at a time when many countries are worried about Iran’s nuclear activities and rising tensions in the region. China’s Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu will lead the talks on Friday, joined by Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.

Nuclear Activities and Regional Security

During a press briefing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said the talks will focus on Iran’s nuclear activities and regional security issues. This meeting shows how China is building stronger ties with both Russia and Iran.

The talks are happening at the same time as joint naval exercises called “Security Belt-2025” involving the three countries. According to SCMP, Chinese ships arrived near Iran’s Chabahar Port on Sunday and joined Iranian and Russian navies for the drills, which include practice missions like maritime attacks, search-and-rescue operations, and interception exercises. These drills will end on Thursday.

The military cooperation between China, Russia, and Iran is taking place while the United States is trying to restart talks with Iran about its nuclear program. U.S. President Donald Trump recently sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, asking for new negotiations and a peaceful solution.

Trump said, “We’re down to final strokes with Iran,” showing his desire to avoid conflict and reach an agreement. However, Iran called Trump’s efforts a “repetitive show” and expressed deep distrust toward the U.S.

Iran’s Willingness in Nuclear program

Despite this, Iran has shown some willingness to discuss its nuclear program if the talks focus only on military aspects. This comes after Trump suggested reducing nuclear stockpiles. Iran’s UN mission said on Sunday that such talks could happen under certain conditions, even though Khamenei has strongly rejected similar offers in the past.

Trump’s efforts are part of his larger goal to reduce nuclear weapons worldwide. He wants Russia and China to join discussions to cut down nuclear arsenals and military spending. Last month, Trump questioned the need for new nuclear weapons, saying existing ones are already enough to “destroy the world 50 times over, 100 times over.”

China’s Disagreements

China has resisted U.S. attempts to include it in nuclear arms reduction talks. China believes the U.S. and Russia, which have much larger nuclear stockpiles, should make significant cuts first. During his first term, Trump tried to involve China in talks linked to the U.S.-Russia New START treaty but failed.

The growing partnership between China, Russia, and Iran has drawn attention from Western countries, especially as these major powers compete for influence in the Middle East. Russia has previously offered to mediate between the U.S. and Iran, despite tensions with the U.S. over issues like Ukraine. The upcoming talks in Beijing highlight the complex relationships and ongoing efforts to address global security challenges.
