Lengpui Airport: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will officially take over security duties at Lengpui Airport in Mizoram on April 24. This will be the first time the CISF is setting up a unit in Mizoram and the 69th civil airport in the country to come under its protection since the year 2000. A senior CISF officer confirmed that joint security work with Mizoram Police and the CRPF already started earlier this week to ensure a smooth shift in duties.

Lengpui Airport is very important for the state. It is located around 35 kilometers away from Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, in Mamit district. It also has a special place in India’s airport history because it was the first airport in the country built by a state government, as noted by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

The airport sits close to India’s borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh. This makes it an important part of India’s “Act East Policy,” which focuses on better connections and economic ties with Southeast Asian countries. With the CISF stepping in, security at Lengpui will become tighter and more professional. The force has a lot of experience in handling airport safety and fighting terrorism, which will help keep passengers safe and support Mizoram’s growth, reports Tribune India.

From April 24, the CISF will guard the airport 24 hours a day. Their trained aviation security group will be in charge of checking passengers, watching entry points, and making sure that everyone gets proper checks and frisking before they board flights. Their main goal is to stop any kind of threat and keep the airport running safely and smoothly.

Officials believe this new step will not just improve air travel safety in Mizoram but also bring more trust among travelers and airlines. This could lead to more flights coming in and going out of Lengpui, helping the state’s economy grow stronger. One officer said, “The CISF’s presence is expected to boost confidence among travellers and airlines, potentially increasing flight operations and supporting Mizoram’s economic growth.”

He also said this step is not just about protecting one airport. It shows the government’s strong focus on improving air travel in India’s northeastern region and bringing it closer to the rest of the country. “This initiative not only strengthened India’s aviation security network but also reaffirmed the government’s focus on integrating the northeast into the nation’s growth story,” the official said.
