CISF Head Constable Shot Dead Near Bengal-Jharkhand Border; Probe Underway

Asansol | Newsd.in — In a chilling incident that has raised questions about security in sensitive border zones, CISF head constable Sunil Paswan (45) was shot dead at close range late Wednesday night near the Domdaha–Dhangari area under Salanpur police station, close to the West Bengal–Jharkhand border.

Paswan, who was posted at the Phusro unit of CISF in Bokaro, hailed from Mihijam Baraipara, a small township near Chittaranjan in Jharkhand. He had returned home recently and was reportedly lured out by a group of four to five unidentified men on the pretext of showing him a plot of land. The attackers allegedly fired at him from behind in the dark.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. and was immediately reported to the Eastern Zone headquarters of the CISF in Kolkata.

Clues at the Crime Scene

Local police, under the jurisdiction of the Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate, found a motorcycle and an empty liquor bottle at the crime scene. The body was sent to Asansol District Hospital for post-mortem.

ACP Javed Hussein (Kulti division), who is overseeing the investigation, confirmed that both Rupnarayanpur and Salanpur police are actively involved in the case, with additional support from Jharkhand police.

“We’re scanning mobile tower dumps and nearby CCTV footage. His killers will be identified and brought to justice,” said ACP Hussein, adding that no firm leads have emerged yet, and “all angles are being investigated.”

Family in Shock, Motive Unclear

Sunil Paswan leaves behind his wife and two sons. The family is devastated by the sudden and violent nature of the attack.

A close friend of Paswan, who accompanied him partway, recalled: “It was too dark to see anyone clearly. As soon as I heard the gunshot, I ran to alert nearby villagers and call the police.”

Security Concerns in Sensitive Zone

This incident comes at a time when interstate border areas—especially between Bengal and Jharkhand—are increasingly under scrutiny for criminal activity and weak policing infrastructure. That a central paramilitary official could be killed so easily in a civilian setting underscores the urgent need for better coordination between states and security forces.
