India K-5 SLBM: India’s K-5 submarine missile program has reportedly crossed an important stage after an underwater “pop-up” test. In simple words, this was a trial to see if the missile could come out safely from under the water before its engine starts. The report says this step matters because it is part of building India’s next-generation submarine-launched ballistic missile, and the missile is also being linked to possible MIRV capability.
The test was done from an underwater platform, not from a normal land site. The missile was pushed out from below the water surface, which helped check the ejection system and the strength of the launch setup. This kind of trial is also called a “pop-up” or cold-launch test.

This part of the missile journey is very delicate. Before any powered flight begins, the missile must leave the launcher safely using gas pressure. If this step goes wrong, the launcher or the missile can get damaged. That is why this test is seen as a big checkmark on the road toward a real long-range sea-based missile.
The report also says the missile is expected to work with future Indian nuclear submarines. It may be fitted on the Arihant-class boats and on the future S5-class submarines. Another report inside DRDO’s own publication says the next class of SSBNs will carry K-5 missiles with a range of more than 5,000 km.
K-5, MIRV and India’s Sea Power
The K-5 is described as an advanced submarine-launched ballistic missile being developed by DRDO. Public reporting says it is expected to have a range of about 5,000 to 6,000 km, use a three-stage solid fuel system, carry a nuclear payload, and move at around Mach 7+ in estimated speed. The same report says it may also have MIRV-enabled strike ability.

MIRV means Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle. In very simple terms, one missile can carry more than one warhead and send them toward different targets. That gives a bigger reach, makes missile defence harder, and reduces the need to fire many missiles at once. The report says this could boost India’s sea-based nuclear deterrence and second-strike capability.
Sea-based missiles matter a lot because submarines can hide underwater for long periods. That makes them one of the most survivable parts of a nuclear deterrence system. Reports say the upcoming INS Aridhaman and future S5-class submarines may carry K-5, which would let India strike faraway targets while staying inside the Indian Ocean region.
