INS Nirdeshak: The Indian Navy will receive its new survey ship, Nirdeshak, next week. This ship will collect deep-sea information, helping warships and submarines in their operations.
Commander Vivek Madhwal, the Indian Navy spokesperson, said that Nirdeshak will join the Navy’s fleet on December 18 in Visakhapatnam. Over 80 percent of the ship’s materials are made in India. The commissioning ceremony, led by Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, will have senior Navy officers, GRSE representatives, and other important guests. The event will be hosted by the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command.
“The Indian Navy is all set to commission its latest survey ship ‘Nirdeshak’ at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam, on December 18,” a Navy spokesperson said according to The Economic Times.

“With an endurance of over 25 days at sea and a top speed exceeding 18 knots, INS Nirdeshak is set to enhance India’s maritime capabilities. It will play a pivotal role in mapping the nation’s waters and strengthening India’s strategic presence in the Indian Ocean Region through its foreign cooperation surveys,” he added.
GRSE Kolkata’s Survey Ship Nirdeshak
The survey ship Nirdeshak was built by GRSE Kolkata. It weighs 3,800 tones, is 110 meters long, and runs on two diesel engines. The ship has advanced hydrographic and oceanographic survey tools.
As per FinancialExpress, Nirdeshak is designed for hydrographic surveys, navigation support, and maritime operations. It replaces the first survey ship, which served for almost 32 years.
This is the second ship of the large survey vessel project by GRSE. The first, Sandhayak, joined the Navy earlier this year. GRSE is also building two more survey ships under this project, named Ichhak and Sanshodhan.
