Indian Navy Tamal frigate: India is about to add a powerful new warship to its navy. The ship, named Tamal, is one of the most advanced stealth frigates in the world. Built in Russia at the Yantar Shipyard, Tamal is designed to carry the deadly BrahMos missile, which can strike enemy ships with great precision.
This warship is part of a deal between India and Russia signed in 2016. The agreement was to build four Talwar-class stealth frigates two in Russia and two in India. Tamal is the second ship from this deal, and it is expected to join the Indian Navy by June 2025.
According to India Today, the first ship from this deal, INS Tushil, has already been delivered to India. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh officially welcomed it into the Navy during his visit to Russia on December 9, 2024. INS Tushil traveled over 12,500 miles, passing through eight countries, before reaching India safely.

Tamal is right now undergoing tests in Russia. Once these tests are completed, a team of Indian Navy sailors will bring the ship to India. Around 200 Indian Navy personnel have already arrived in St. Petersburg, Russia, to train and take part in the sea trials. These trials will last about six weeks. After that, the ship will be prepared for its journey to India.
Tamal is a highly advanced warship with many features that make it a strong weapon. It can move at speeds of up to 30 knots (55 km/h) and can travel up to 3,000 kilometers without stopping. One of its key strengths is its ability to fire the BrahMos missile, which is a supersonic missile that can destroy enemy ships. The ship is also equipped with rockets and torpedoes to fight against submarines.
Tamal can aslo carry a helicopter, which helps in surveillance and combat missions. The ship is designed to avoid detection by enemy radar, making it harder to target. Despite its heavy weight of 3,900 tons, Tamal is very agile and can move quickly during missions.

Tamal will be the last warship India imports from another country. The Indian Navy has decided to focus on building warships entirely within India from now on. India has been using Talwar-class frigates since 2003, and currently, six of these ships are in service. Four of them are already equipped with BrahMos missiles, while the other two are being upgraded.
Even though there were concerns about delays due to the Russia-Ukraine war, Tamal’s delivery has stayed on schedule. The ship uses engines made in Ukraine, but these were delivered before the war started. India’s Goa Shipyard is building two more stealth frigates. The engines for these ships have already been secured. The first of these, INS Triput, has started sea trials, showing India’s growing ability to build its own warships.
With Tamal joining the ship soon, the Indian Navy will become even stronger in the Indo-Pacific region. This new warship will greatly enhance India’s ability to protect its waters and respond to threats.
