These barges were designed in India by SECON Engineering Projects Pvt Ltd, working with an Indian ship design firm. Their design was rigorously tested for seaworthiness at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) in Visakhapatnam. Built to meet Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) standards and naval requirements, the barges ensure high reliability in operations.
The MCA Barges reflect the Indian Navy’s support for the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, promoting local shipbuilding and empowering MSMEs. According to Ministry of Defence, 7 of these barges are already in service, improving the Navy’s efficiency by enabling the transport and handling of ammunition and supplies for ships at jetties and in outer harbours.
