Indian Navy Officer Arrested in Qatar: Former Indian Navy officer Purnendu Tiwari has been arrested again in Qatar. Sources said Qatari authorities took him into custody in a new financial case. Officials clearly said this fresh arrest has no connection with the case from 2022 that involved eight Indian nationals. Because of this new case, Tiwari cannot return to India right now.
Sources explained that this arrest happened after earlier legal issues were mostly resolved through talks between India and Qatar. The new case stands separate and deals only with financial matters. Because of this, Tiwari remains in jail in Qatar. His family has now contacted the top leaders of the Indian government and asked for help. So far, the Ministry of External Affairs has not released any official statement.

Who is Purnendu Tiwari?
Purnendu Tiwari served as an officer in the Indian Navy for many years. He worked as a navigation expert. During his service, he commanded INS Magar and also worked as the fleet navigating officer for the Navy’s eastern fleet. He served on Rajput class destroyers as well.
After he retired from the Navy, he joined a private company named Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services. This company works in defence-related training and support. It provided services to the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces. In 2019, he became the first armed forces veteran to receive the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award. Then president Ramnath Kovind presented him with this award.
The 2022 Arrest
In August 2022, Qatari authorities detained Tiwari and seven other former Indian Navy officers in Doha. The case shocked many people in India. In 2023, a Qatari court sentenced all eight men to death. Qatar never shared clear public details about the charges in this case.
The Indian government stepped in and used strong diplomacy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally discussed the matter with the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani during his visit to India. Later, the Emir of Qatar reduced the punishments and granted pardons. Seven of the eight former Navy officers returned safely to India after the death sentences were commuted.

Tiwari stayed back in Qatar because authorities linked him to another financial investigation. Now, sources say his re-arrest has led to his continued detention and re-imprisonment. This means he cannot travel home yet.
