BSNL Partners With Viasat to Upgrade Indian Navy Satellite Links

Under this plan, Viasat will bring its powerful Ka-band satellite systems. These will work together with the L-band systems that are already being used.

BSNL Partnership with Viasat

BSNL Partnership with Viasat: BSNL has shared new news about working with a space company called Viasat. This partnership is made to help the Indian Navy improve how it talks and sends data using satellites. BSNL said this new phase of the Navy’s satellite upgrade will start later this month.

Under this plan, Viasat will bring its powerful Ka-band satellite systems. These will work together with the L-band systems that are already being used. This mix will help the Navy get stronger and safer communication. It will also help messages move faster and stay more reliable even during important missions. Viasat’s international government team will help run the project through its Communication Services division.

Faster and Safer Links at Sea

BSNL explained that this upgrade will help the Indian Navy move to a system that uses many satellite bands and many satellite networks. The system will use BSNL’s Gateway Earth Station along with Viasat’s global satellite network. Together they will give better coverage. Ships will get faster data. The connection will be more stable during critical military work.

“BSNL is proud to support the Indian Navy’s SATCOM modernisation by providing advanced connectivity solutions through our partnership with Viasat. This upgrade reflects BSNL’s ongoing commitment to enabling India’s strategic communication needs with resilient and secure infrastructure,” said Robert Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL.

Long History of Support From Viasat

Viasat has worked with the Government of India for many years. The company already helps with satellite services for disaster response and tsunami early warning systems through the National Institute of Ocean Technology. It also supports vessel tracking for the Directorate General of Shipping. In addition, Viasat provides in-flight internet for government and private aircraft flying in India.

With this new phase starting, both BSNL and Viasat said they are serious about making India’s defence and sea communication systems stronger. They believe this upgrade will help the Navy stay connected in all situations.

“This upgrade combines the resilience of L-band with the power of high-throughput Ka-band, providing enhanced connectivity for mission-critical operations. It also reinforces our long-term commitment to India’s defence and maritime communication ecosystem,” said Todd McDonell, President, International Government, Viasat.
