Artificial shore Shangumugham: Shanghumugham Beach in Thiruvananthapuram is now ready for this year’s Navy Day show after workers rushed to finish the main part of the beach repair. MLA Antony Raju said the Navy decided to hold the event one day early and told TOI that the date changed “from Dec 4 to Dec 3” and that “the decision to advance the event came from Navy.”
The state started the beach upgrade many weeks ago because the area had heavy damage from sea erosion. Workers first added a thick layer of sand over stones to make the shore firm again. This rebuilt around 120m of the beach. This first part of the work is done and the Navy has already taken the fixed stretch for its checks. The full project cost is around Rs 14.8 crore.

Officials from the irrigation department said they also built a strong 180m seawall to bring back the lost beach. Along the shore, workers are setting up thirteen large temporary shelters called “German hangers” to seat guests and important people. These hangers will stay up until the main event ends, reports TOI.
Navy Show for Visitors
The Navy plans to hold a powerful show during the celebrations. The event will feature an Operational Demonstration, known as Op Demo, that will show how the Navy works on sea, under water and in the air. Ships, submarines and aircraft will join the display at the same time. Organisers say the event will also highlight India’s dream of building more defence gear on its own. They say the Navy wants to act as a “Preferred Security Partner” in the Indian Ocean area.
Local leaders say PM Narendra Modi may come as the chief guest for the main ceremony. The viewing area sits on the south side of the famous Kalmandapam at Shanghumugham. This is where all the special guests will sit and watch the show.
MLA Raju said the repair team will return to finish the remaining parts of the beach after Navy gives the land back on Dec 20. He explained that more work still waits on the northern side. The state government had already given approval in Oct 2025 to fix the beach from the old Kalmandapam all the way 360m towards the north.
