Advanced Stealth Frigate ‘Tavasya’ to Strengthen Dominance in Indian Ocean

India’s GSL has launched the Tavasya, a stealth frigate, under Project 1135.6, enhancing its defence capabilities and Navy’s readiness for maritime challenges.

  • Stealth Frigate Tavasya: The Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) launched ‘Tavasya’, the second frigate under Project 1135.6. This event marks a huge step forward in India’s ability to build its own warships, showcasing the country’s growing self-reliance in defence technology.

‘Tavasya’ is a powerful and advanced warship, weighing over 3,800 tons. It is packed with weapons and designed to carry out a variety of missions, both offensive and defensive. This frigate will help India strengthen its control over the Indian Ocean Region. The name ‘Tavasya’ comes from the mace of Bhima, a symbol of strength from Indian mythology.

The new frigate is equipped with modern stealth features, which make it harder for enemies to detect. It also has high-endurance capabilities, meaning it can stay at sea for long periods, and next-generation combat systems to tackle threats from the air, surface, and underwater. According to The week, the defence ministry said that ‘Tavasya’ will significantly boost India’s maritime defence and ensure the Navy remains strong and ready for any challenge.

Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth highlighted the importance of this achievement. He said that the successful production of critical components like the BrahMos missile system, torpedo launchers, sonar, and auxiliary control systems within India shows the country’s growing strength in shipbuilding. “The launch of Tavasya is not just a step forward for the Indian Navy but a giant leap for India’s strategic defence ambitions,” he added.

Seth also emphasized that ‘Tavasya’ will greatly enhance the Indian Navy’s operational power. He further shared India’s goal to become a global leader in warship exports. The Goa Shipyard Limited has already played a key role in defence exports, and the defence ministry aims to achieve Rs 50,000 crore in defence exports by 2029.
