Indian Coast Guard Orchestrates Exercise 'Sagar Kavach' To Bolster Coastal Security

Indian Coast Guard Orchestrates Exercise: The coastal security exercise ‘Sagar Kavach’ is scheduled to take place on November 16–17, 2023, along the shores of Kerala and Mahe. The exercise aims to strengthen coastal security mechanisms and validate standard operating procedures. The semi-annual exercise, in which numerous national and state organisations actively participate, demonstrates a cohesive strategy for strengthening India’s coastal defences.

The Indian Coast Guard is in charge of ‘Sagar Kavach,’ a coalition of organizations that includes the Indian Navy, the Department of Ports, the Department of Fisheries, the Intelligence Bureau, Customs, the CISF, and Kadalora Jagiratha Samithi. This extensive cooperation emphasises how crucial a multi-agency strategy is to guaranteeing the security of the long stretch of coastline.

The exercise’s participating units are tactically split into two teams: the Attack (Red) and Defence (Blue) forces. The Red forces test the coastal defences by simulating efforts to infiltrate from seaward into coastal areas. Coastal Security Surveillance is established by the Blue troops to counter these fictitious dangers by stopping any efforts at infiltration.

The experiment underscores the importance of fishermen’s active participation in coastal security, acknowledging their vital role in the process. Fishermen are asked to notify the Indian Coast Guard as soon as they come into contact with any strange vessels operating near the coast. By working together, we hope to improve the eyes and ears on the coast and make the fishing community a vital asset for security.

Achievements From Previous Practises

The Indian Coast Guard released a press release highlighting the success of previous drills, stating that all attacks were successfully neutralised by the Coastal Security Group (Blue Force) during the most recent coastal security exercise in April 2023. This accomplishment highlights the benefits of consistent teamwork and demonstrates a coordinated strategy that fortifies India’s foundation for coastal security.

“Sagar Kavach” encompasses a variety of geological and operational problems, covering the full 590-kilometer stretch of the Kerala and Mahe coast. The exercise’s design takes into account the particular complexity of the coastal environment, making sure that security measures are reliable and flexible enough to handle a range of situations.

The consistent execution of “Sagar Kavach” and related drills over time is indicative of the dedication to enhancing preparation and resilience in the face of changing security threats. Through the promotion of collaboration between federal and state actors, these drills play a major role in upholding an efficient coastal defence system.

As ‘Sagar Kavach’ gets ready to reveal its strategic layout, it represents an active approach to protecting India’s sea boundaries and maintaining the country’s resolve to guarantee a safe and unassailable shore line.
