In a significant move, the Indian Army is considering stopping the purchase of expensive tactical missiles and instead focusing on the Pinaka rocket system, which is locally developed.

The DRDO has received approval to develop two new variants of the Pinaka rocket with advanced guidance systems. According to IDRW, These new versions will have longer ranges of 120 km and 300 km. Pune-based Munitions India Limited (MIL) will manufacture these rockets under an agreement with the DRDO once the new variants are ready.

The Army has shown interest in the 300 km version because it can carry larger payloads and is compatible with existing launch platforms.

It also has the ability to strike deeper into enemy territory and destroy military equipment. This variant offers both long-range and high precision, which will be useful for strategic military operations.
