Indian Army Drone Threats: The Indian Army is making big changes to improve its air defence systems to tackle new threats, especially from drones. Lt Gen Sumer Ivan D’Cunha, the Director General of Army Air Defence, shared these updates in a recent meeting. He explained how the Army is working hard to stay ahead in modern warfare, where drones are becoming a major concern.
The Army Air Defence, which became its own unit in 1994, is responsible for stopping enemy aircraft and drones before they can cause harm. Over the years, the use of drones in wars has increased a lot. Events like the drone attacks on Saudi Aramco in 2019, the killing of an Iranian general in 2020, and the drone strike at the Jammu airbase in 2021 have shown how important it is to have strong air defence systems. The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has also highlighted the growing role of drones in battles.

To deal with these challenges, the Indian Army is taking several steps. According to Times Now, they are bringing in advanced radars that can spot even the smallest drones. These radars are so good that they can detect drones as tiny as a small bird. Second, the Army is using artificial intelligence (AI) to quickly figure out if a drone is friendly or an enemy. They are also improving their command systems to make this process faster and more accurate.
For stopping and destroying enemy drones, the Army has introduced a new system called the Integrated Drone Detection & Interdiction System. This system uses special sensors, jammers, and even high-powered lasers to take down drones. Additionally, the Army is replacing old guns with new, modern ones that can fire smart ammunition.
They are also getting new missile systems to protect specific areas and respond quickly to threats. The Army is also preparing for drone-on-drone battles. They are developing systems where their own drones can fight and destroy enemy drones. They are also introducing vehicle-mounted systems that can quickly respond to drone attacks.

To speed up these developments, the Army is working closely with Indian companies and startups. They are encouraging these groups to come up with new ideas and technologies under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. This helps the Army get the best tools to protect the country.
There are still challenges. Managing thousands of drones in the sky is not easy, especially when enemies are also improving their drone technology. The Army is also working on better coordination with the Indian Air Force, which is responsible for protecting the country’s airspace. They are creating clear rules to make sure both teams work together smoothly.
