IAF Combat Training Meghalaya: The Indian Air Force (IAF) recently carried out a special training exercise at Umiam Lake in Shillong. During this exercise, they showed off different types of aircraft, helicopters, and skilled para jumpers. The goal of the exercise was to improve teamwork between the IAF, the Indian Army Special Forces, and the Navy. This kind of training helps them work better together during real missions.
According to India Today NE, the training included exciting activities like dropping Combat Rubberised Raiding Crafts, para jumps, and helocasting. Helocasting is when soldiers jump from an aircraft into water. The IAF used An-32 and C-130 aircraft, as well as Mi-17 helicopters, for these exercises. National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets in Shillong were invited to watch the training. They got to see these operations up close and were very impressed.

The IAF shared details about the training on X (formerly Twitter). They wrote, “IAF executed combat operations training at Umiam Lake, Shillong, featuring Combat Rubberised Raiding Craft drops, para jumps, and helocasting from An-32, C-130 aircraft, and Mi-17 helicopters.” They also added, “These missions enhance interoperability with Indian Army Special Forces and were witnessed and admired by NCC cadets in Shillong.”
Earlier, on March 5, reports said that a high-level committee from the Defence Ministry agreed to the IAF’s request for new multirole fighter aircraft. These new aircraft will help the IAF become stronger and more capable in combat. The Defence Secretary, Rajesh Kumar Singh, submitted a report to the Defence Minister about improving the IAF’s capabilities. This report included the IAF’s need for new fighter jets.

The committee discussed how the IAF would prepare a plan to acquire these new capabilities. The Defence Ministry will now work on getting the necessary approvals quickly. This decision came at a time when the United States was trying to sell its F-35 fifth-generation fighter jets to India, and Russia was offering its Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets.
The committee also identified important areas where the IAF needs to improve. They made recommendations for short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans to help the IAF become stronger in the best possible way. These steps will ensure the IAF is ready for any challenges in the future.
