Indian MiG-29 Brake Parachute: Gliders India Limited, also called GIL, is a company under the Ministry of Defence in India. The company made a big push at EDEX 2025 in Egypt by showing its new brake parachute system for the MIG-29M and MIG-29M2 fighter jets. GIL built this parachute fully in India, and the team created it at the company’s facility in Kanpur.
New Indian Parachute Made for Egypt’s MIG-29 Fleet
The parachute that GIL made can replace the Russian parachute that Egypt uses right now. Egypt has 46 MIG-29M and MIG-29M2 aircraft that came between 2017 and 2020. GIL said the new Indian parachute fits the jets without any changes. The parachute already passed many tests in India. Engineers tested it on the ground and in high-speed sled trials at DRDO ranges. After that, the Indian Air Force also tried it in real flights on MiG-29UPG jets during 2024-2025.

GIL officials explained at the India Pavilion that the parachute costs much less than the Russian one. They said it is 30-35% cheaper than the original system. They also said they can send spare canopies in only 90 days. Many countries faced slow supply times from Russia since 2022, and some nations waited 18 to 24 months for parts.
Interest From Egyptian Air Force Officers
Many Egyptian officers came to the GIL stall at the show. Maintenance officers from the Egyptian Air Force looked closely at the parachute samples and the papers that GIL displayed. Egypt now tries to find new and safe sources for MIG-29 parts because the Russia-Ukraine war made old supply lines slow and difficult. This problem made the Indian option one of the fastest and most trusted choices for Egypt right now.

GIL also brought many other products to the show. The company displayed anti-G suits, ejection seat parts, and different types of parachutes that many African and Middle Eastern air forces already use. Industry people said both sides have already started early talks on the technical side. They also said a deal might move fast because India and Egypt made a stronger defence cooperation plan in 2023.
