IAF Tejas Mk1A Delivery: The Indian Air Force is taking a very close look at the HAL Tejas Mk1A fighter jet program in May. This check is very important, as it will help decide when the new fighter planes can finally start joining the Air Force.
These jets have been delayed for a long time, and because of that, the Air Force wants to be very sure everything is ready before saying yes to take them. The review will check where the project stands right now. Only after that will the Air Force agree to accept the planes.
Right now, the Air Force has ordered 180 of these fighters, there were 2 deals. The first contract was for 83 jets, and it was signed in 2021. Later, another 97 jets were approved in a second order. Earlier, in December 2025, top officials already talked about the progress of the Tejas Mk1A. Many big defence projects are expected to reach key stages by April 2026. So, the Air Force decided to again check the Tejas plan in May.
People in defence say that a clear delivery plan will only be made after this new review is finished. The Air Force does not want half ready planes. It wants aircraft that are fully ready for real missions. It does not want to rush and then fix problems later.
HAL Says Jets are Ready
HAL says it is fully prepared to start giving the jets. HAL officials say five Tejas Mk1A planes are already built and ready for combat. These jets have modern AESA radars, electronic warfare systems, and can carry weapons. The company says these aircraft meet all the strict needs of the Air Force and can be handed over anytime.
Even with these claims, the delivery has gone past the old deadlines. The Air Force was supposed to get the first jets last year. But the service has a strong rule. It will only take planes that are fully mission ready. It does not want planes that need changes after joining the fleet.
IAF needs strong fighter jets quickly because its number of fighter squadrons is going down. Older aircraft like the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 have been retired. So new planes are badly needed.
Production Problems
There was one big positive moment for the program on 17 October. The first Tejas Mk1A prototype flew for the first time from HAL’s Nashik plant. This was important because it showed that a third production line is now working. HAL already had two lines in Bengaluru. With three lines, the company hopes to build jets faster and handle the large order.
The main reason for delays has been problems in the supply chain. The biggest issue was getting the GE F404-IN20 engines, which power the jets. Because of this, the production speed slowed down a lot last year.

HAL has still managed to keep around 15 aircraft in different stages of readiness. By the end of the year, this number could reach almost 20. But final delivery still depends on parts coming on time from foreign partners.
For the Air Force, the goal is that it wants aircraft that meet every operational need with no shortcuts. For HAL, this review is a chance to show that problems are being fixed and that India’s own defence industry can succeed.
