Car Nicobar IAF Runway Upgrade: On the 2nd of January 2026, the newly resurfaced and upgraded runway at the Indian Air Force’s Car Nicobar Air Base was inaugurated by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan, who considered this development as a main milestone in reinforcing India’s defence readiness in the eastern Indian Ocean and also improving its overall military posture.
Car Nicobar IAF Runway Upgrade: Ceremony Highlights
CSF General Anil Chauhan got to the air base of Car Nicobar Island at about 11:30 AM local time and was given a hearty welcome by Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, the Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), together with other high-ranking military officials. This was the ceremony that saw the official opening of the upgraded military runway, which had undergone extensive refurbishment and expansion works.
“The upgraded runway will give more strength to the eastern front due to its direct strategic oversight of the Malacca Strait – a global maritime lifeline/passage for international trade and energy supplies through ships. It will give the Indian Air Force (IAF) more ability for quick air operations,” the senior official said.
Why Car Nicobar Air Base Matters?
The Air Force Station on Car Nicobar is situated in the northern Nicobar Islands and comes under the Andaman and Nicobar Command, which is India’s only tri-service theatre command integrating Army, Navy, and Air Force assets in a single structure.

The base is very much strategically positioned near the Malacca Strait, one of the most significant maritime trade routes across the globe thus granting India a decisive point of view over a global choke point of major importance for the trade and energy supplies. Such nearness opens up Indian forces to the capabilities of improved monitoring, quick responding, and deterrent through the region.
Car Nicobar IAF Runway Upgrade: What’s New?
The runway at Car Nicobar has been upgraded in major ways:
Resurfacing and strengthening of the runway: The whole runway of about 2.7 km in length and 43 m in width has been resurfaced to allow heavier aircraft and more frequent operations.

Extension of the apron area: With a larger aircraft apron, multiple aircraft can now be parked, refueled, and turned around faster, thus the operational tempo is getting higher.
New taxi track: A new taxi track can also be used as a secondary runway in rescue or very busy situations, thus the base operations become more resilient.

Operational Edge
Response The upgraded runway will thus be a big power for India’s eastern front and the IAF will be able to launch flying operations quicker, including surveillance sorties, rapid deployment missions, and long-range firing exercises, according to officials.
The enhanced infrastructure of the base paves the way for exercises that contribute to the readiness and coordination of the different branches of the armed forces as well. Given the increased geopolitical activities in the Indo-Pacific, this is crucial, and it aligns with India’s overall measures to strengthen its military infrastructure as part of its “Act East” policy, which aims to deepen strategic ties with countries in Southeast Asia and promote regional stability.
A Broader Defence Vision
The inauguration also comes in line with the Indian government’s vision of modernising forward defence infrastructure to stay ahead of evolving security challenges. The Car Nicobar upgrade is part of a continuing strategy to expand air and naval strength across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands among India’s most strategically critical regions, due to their proximity to the Strait of Malacca and broader Indo-Pacific theatre.
CDS’s Tour and Additional Activities
During his visit, General Chauhan is also expected to inaugurate a new storage facility at the base and pay homage at the Tsunami Memorial, honoring those affected by the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that had previously damaged the airfield and its infrastructure.
What This Means Going Forward?
In practical terms:
1. The IAF can now operate more efficiently from Car Nicobar, including the deployment of fighters such as Su-30 MKI and Mirage aircraft (as being planned post-inauguration).
2. India gains the ability to project air power more swiftly across the eastern Indian Ocean.
3. This upgrade enhances rapid response capability, which is key in humanitarian missions, disaster relief, surveillance, and defence operations.
