Indigenous KAL Drone International Sales: Indian defence technology company IG Defence seems to be prepping its own KAL long range attack drone to go international soon, as the demand for more autonomous strike systems keeps rising with security dynamics in the Gulf region shifting in an almost uneasy way. The company says the export push is subject to approvals and export clearances from the Government of India, with interest reportedly emerging from several Gulf countries.
What Is the KAL Drone?
According to IG Defence, the KAL is an indigenous long-range one-way attack drone designed for deep-penetration missions against high-value strategic targets. The platform combines autonomous navigation, long endurance and precision targeting in a system intended for modern battlefield operations.
The growing interest comes amid heightened security concerns in the Gulf, where recent conflicts have underscored the operational value of long-range unmanned systems for surveillance and precision strike roles. Defence analysts note that such drones can offer lower operational costs compared with traditional manned aircraft while providing greater flexibility in contested environments.

India has been steadily expanding its indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities under its self-reliance initiative, with drones emerging as one of the fastest-growing segments. KAL belongs to the emerging class of Shahed-136-type long-range one-way attack drones, alongside systems such as Russia’s Geran-2 and the United States’ LUCAS. With an operational range of up to 1,000 km, an endurance of 7–8 hours and the ability to carry a 50 kg payload, the drone is built to do precision strike missions and also keep operational costs lower and reduce risks to personnel.
“As countries across the Gulf and other strategic regions continue expanding investments in autonomous strike capabilities, global demand for sovereign, affordable, and rapidly deployable unmanned systems is expected to grow significantly,” the company told ThePrint.
Adding, “Subject to all applicable Government of India export approvals and regulatory clearances, KAL positions IG Defence to contribute to India’s ambition of becoming a trusted supplier of indigenous defence technologies to friendly foreign nations.”
