DRDO’s MIGM Mine: The MIGM naval mine is a new weapon made in India. It is built to stop enemy ships and submarines in the sea. This system is created by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) along with the Indian Navy. It is a big step for India because now the country can depend less on other nations for such weapons.
This mine is called a Multi-Influence Ground Mine. It stays hidden on the sea floor and does nothing at first. It only becomes active when it senses a target nearby. Once it confirms the target, it explodes and destroys it.

Earlier mines used just one way to detect ships. But MIGM is smarter and uses many ways together. Because of this, it is harder for modern ships to escape from it.
How MIGM works?
This mine is not simple. It has different sensors that help it understand what is around it.

- It uses acoustic sensors
- It uses pressure sensors
These sensors help it notice the special signals of ships and submarines. Even stealth ships, which try to hide, can still be found.
The system also has smart electronics inside. It studies all the signals before taking action. This helps avoid mistakes and stops it from attacking the wrong target.
The mine is kept on the seabed. It quietly watches everything. When a ship or submarine comes close, it checks the signals. If everything matches, then it explodes at the right time.
In May 2025, this system was tested in real combat conditions. The test used less explosives but still worked well. It was developed by the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory in Visakhapatnam. Companies like Bharat Dynamics Limited and Apollo Microsystems are helping in making it.

It is now ready to be used by the Indian Navy. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said it will make India stronger in underwater fighting.
Importance of the Mine
The MIGM mine gives India more power in the sea. It helps the Navy fight submarines and ships better. It also protects important places like coastal areas, sea routes, and naval bases. Since it is made in India, it supports Aatmanirbhar Bharat. This means the country does not need to buy such systems from outside.
It also acts like a warning for enemies. If they know such mines are present, they will think twice before entering those areas. This makes it a strong defence tool.
