DRDO Portable Water Purifier: The Defence Research and Development Organisation, also called DRDO, has created a small and easy water desalination device to help soldiers get safe drinking water during field duties. This new system helps troops when they work far from cities and clean water is hard to find. The device is made to support a small group of soldiers who stay in remote and risky places for long hours.
DRDO named this system the Sea Water Desalination System (SWaDeS). The Defence Laboratory in Jodhpur developed it after the Tri-command services asked for a simple solution to water shortages. The system can work by hand or by using an engine. Because of this flexible design, soldiers can use it in many different places. The system is not only useful for the military but can also help people in civilian areas where fresh water is very limited.

How SWaDeS works in the field?
Scientists say SWaDeS works well during naval missions and at coastal bases where seawater is easily available. It can clean salty sea water and turn it into safe drinking water. The system also works inland in places like Pangong Tso in Ladakh. This lake contains salty water and lies close to the China border where many Indian soldiers stay deployed.
The manual version of SWaDeS is light enough for one person to carry. It helps in emergency situations and can provide drinking water for about 10 to 12 soldiers. This version is useful during long patrols or when troops stay in areas with no water supply. It cleans saline water and makes it safe as per drinking standards.
The engine-based version is stronger and serves a bigger group. It can clean seawater with salinity as high as 35,000 milligrams per litre and bring it down to less than 500 milligrams per litre. This allows 20 to 25 soldiers to get clean water daily.

DRDO has also made many other water cleaning systems for both soldiers and civilians. These systems work in different weather and land conditions. Some units clean water by removing arsenic iron and manganese. DRDO has also built a Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Water Purification System for dangerous environments.
