DRDO KPIs: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has asked DRDO to set proper and clear Key Performance Indicators, also called KPIs, for its defence projects. In very simple words, these are fixed goals that help track how well a project is moving. The panel wants DRDO to use these goals so it can work faster, waste less money, and stay more answerable for the work it does.
The committee said that if DRDO follows such clear targets, it can cut delays, keep costs under control, and improve the way defence projects are handled. The aim is to make the whole system more disciplined and easier to check.

What these KPIs will Cover?
The panel suggested that DRDO should build KPIs around important parts of project work. These include cost efficiency, technical progress, project milestones, target dates, operational strength, and the final delivery of defence systems. In simple terms, this means the organisation should know what it wants to finish, when it wants to finish it, and how much it should spend while doing it.
The committee also said that clear marks or benchmarks should be used while checking each project. Such a system can help the Ministry of Defence see which work is moving well and which work is getting stuck. It can also help spot delays early before they become bigger problems.
More Monitoring, More Accountability
The parliamentary panel feels that a regular checking system inside DRDO will make project management stronger. With better monitoring, DRDO can follow progress in real time, improve accountability, reduce delays, and bring indigenous defence technologies to the field faster.

The committee also supported a transparent benchmarking system that should be used from time to time. This would let the Ministry of Defence review whether the main goals are being reached. At the same time, the panel appreciated DRDO’s existing workplace support systems. These include the Internal Complaints Committee, the Sexual Harassment Electronic Box or She-Box, and nodal officers under the POSH Act. The committee said these systems help solve workplace complaints in time.
The panel also welcomed the government’s stronger focus on defence modernisation and homegrown technology. It asked for a slow and steady increase in India’s defence research and development budget.
