Indian Army GARUD Binoculars: India Optel Limited (IOL) has launched a new binocular called GARUD for people outside the defence sector. What are GARUD Binoculars?
GARUD is an Indian-made binocular developed by India Optel Limited. IOL is a Mini Ratna Category-I Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Department of Defence Production. The company has built its experience over many years by making optical equipment used by the military and security agencies.
The GARUD binoculars have been developed and manufactured by the Ordnance Factory in Dehradun, which is part of India Optel. The company already has experience in making high-resolution binoculars and other optical equipment for defence use. Government defence industry information also lists IOL as a manufacturer of binoculars and other optical systems.
GARUD comes with 8X magnification. This means users can see objects that are far away in greater detail. It also has a 7.6-degree field of view, which gives users a wider area to see while looking through the binoculars.
The binoculars have ±5 diopter adjustment, so users can set the view according to their eyesight. They also have soft eyecups and an easy-to-hold grip for more comfort during long use. GARUD is also weather-resistant, so it can be used outdoors during travel, trekking and other field activities.

GARUD Launch

IOL was created to build self-reliance in optoelectronics for the armed forces and paramilitary forces. Its product range includes optical instruments and systems used by defence customers.
The company has also recently expanded its technology partnerships. In December 2025, IOL signed an agreement with Safran Electronics & Defense to manufacture two high-precision systems in India. These included the SIGMA 30N Digital Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation System and the CM3-MR Direct Firing Sight.
The GARUD launch now takes IOL’s optical expertise to civilian customers too. It can create a new market for the company while giving Indian consumers another locally made option in the binocular segment.
The launch event was presided over by Joint Secretary (Land Systems) Dr. Garima Bhagat. Officials from the Department of Defence Production, Central Armed Police Forces, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Wildlife Society of India and India Optel were also present.
