Saab Offers Lightweight Integrated Mast System to Boost Indian Navy Stealth and Sensors

Saab has offered its SLIM mast system to the Indian Navy to improve warship stealth and sensor fusion. The technology combines multiple systems into one unit, making ships harder to detect.

Saab Lightweight Integrated Mast System

Saab Lightweight Integrated Mast System: Swedish defence company called ‘Saab’ has come forth with a new technology for the Indian Navy. That system is called the Saab Lightweight Integrated Mast, or SLIM. It is made to improve how warships carry their sensors and radars. It also helps ships stay less visible to enemy radar and keeps the top part of the ship clean and better arranged.

This offer comes at a time when India is trying to build more modern warships. Today, just having weapons is not enough. Ships also need to hide better and share information quickly between systems.

One Mast

In older ships, many antennas and radars are placed all over the top of the ship. This makes the ship look messy and also easier to detect. The SLIM system changes this idea completely. It puts all the important sensors and equipment inside one single mast made from special lightweight material.

This mast is already built and tested before it is added to the ship. Because of this, shipbuilders do not have to struggle with fitting different systems together. Everything works smoothly from the start.

The idea for this system comes from Saab’s earlier work on the Visby-class corvette. These ships were among the first to use carbon-fibre material in a big way. Using that experience, Saab made the SLIM mast very light. This helps the ship stay more balanced in water and improves how it moves at sea.

Another big advantage is stealth. The smooth outer surface of the mast reduces radar signals. Since there are no exposed antennas, the ship becomes harder to spot. In modern naval fights, staying hidden can decide who wins.

Built for Modern Warships

Saab is offering this as a complete package. The company handles everything, from building the mast to making sure all sensors inside work properly together. They also check that signals do not interfere with each other. This makes life much easier for shipbuilders, as they do not need to solve complex technical problems themselves.

Modern warships carry many advanced systems like radars, electronic support measures, and communication networks. All of them must work at the same time without failure. The SLIM system is designed to handle this kind of heavy electronic load.

It can also be used on many types of ships. It can fit smaller boats or large destroyers. For India, this makes it useful for future projects like the New Generation Corvettes programme. This project is worth about ₹40,000 crore and plans to build eight modern warships through companies like Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers and Goa Shipyard Limited, reported Defence.in. Adding this mast to those ships, or even older ones, can make them much stronger in defence.

Use in Other Navies

This technology is not just an idea. It is already being used in other countries. The Finnish Navy is adding the SLIM mast to its Pohjanmaa-class corvette ships, which are large and built for tough conditions.

Also the Swedish Royal Navy has upgraded its older Gävle-class corvette ships with this mast. This shows that even old ships can become more advanced without building a completely new one.
