Rolls-Royce 120kN–140kN AMCA Engine: Rolls-Royce is now making a strong pitch for India’s AMCA fighter engine project. In the latest report, the company said the new engine would not be a small one-time build. It would be a 120 kN-plus engine with room for later growth. The idea is to make a core that can be improved over time instead of starting from zero again later. The company’s plan is to help India build a long-term engine family, not just one engine for one aircraft.
Sashi Mukundan, who is the Executive Vice President for Transformation at Rolls-Royce India, said the engine work can happen in India and the new intellectual property should stay with India. The company’s offer also includes “100 percent complete transfer of technology and intellectual property generated under the programme that stays with India.”

What the AMCA Needs
India’s AMCA project needs a strong engine for its later version, while the first AMCA Mk1 aircraft will use the GE F414 engine. The newer AMCA Mk2 needs an Indian-built higher-thrust powerplant. The latest report says Rolls-Royce is offering a clean-sheet design for that future engine. It is meant to support India’s stealth fighter plans and give the aircraft better power, range and upgrade room later on.
Rolls-Royce said the project is not just about defence. The company wants the same engine base to support military aircraft, naval systems, civil aviation and other power needs too. In the company’s own words, it wants India to become its fourth global propulsion hub after the UK, the US and Germany. That is a big ambition, but the company says India already has the talent and industrial base to do it.

Rolls-Royce says the engine core can be tested by 2030. The first flight is aimed for 2034 and production could begin in 2036 if the deal is signed by the end of 2026. The company is also talking about a larger Indian ecosystem, with design, development, manufacturing, testing and maintenance all happening in the country.
Rolls-Royce has also said it wants to double its workforce in India to around 10,000 people and expand local sourcing. It says this would help India build real engine-making strength instead of only assembling imported parts. For New Delhi, that matters because the AMCA engine race is also about self-reliance.
India is weighing Rolls-Royce against France’s Safran, and the promise of full technology transfer and local ownership of the new engine’s IP may make the British offer very attractive.
