Major Bob Khathing Memorial Event: Major Bob Khathing Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid a heartfelt tribute to Major Bob Khathing, calling him an extraordinary leader who played an a very important role in strengthening the North-East and building national security. He spoke at the fifth edition of the Major Bob Khathing Memorial Event, held at Delhi Cantt on March 19, 2025. The Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and United Services Institution of India organized the event to honour the legendary officer.
Singh praised Major Khathing for his bravery on the battlefield and his diplomatic skills. He highlighted his significant efforts in integrating, developing, and rebuilding not just Tawang but the entire North-East region.
“Major Bob Khathing made a significant contribution in strengthening national unity. The work he carried out for the North-East is similar to what Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel did at the national level,” Rajnath Singh said, reported by Ministry of Defence.

The Defence Minister also spoke about Major Khathing’s exceptional administrative skills. He noted his key role in forming the Sashastra Seema Bal and the Nagaland Armed Police, among other important reforms. Singh acknowledged the North-East’s importance in India’s progress and assured that the Government remains committed to increasing the region’s contribution to the country’s development. He credited the Government’s initiatives for the rapid progress in the North-East, which has led to a major decline in violent incidents.
During the event, Rajnath Singh visited a special photo gallery displaying Major Bob Khathing’s outstanding achievements and lasting impact. He also watched a film that portrayed important moments from Major Khathing’s life and career.
Many distinguished guests attended the event, including Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Member of Parliament Alfred Kanngam Arthur, Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Director General Assam Rifles Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, and DG, USI Maj Gen BK Sharma (Retd).

A special keynote address titled “Deciphering Implications of Major Bob Khathing’s Expedition to Tawang” was delivered by former DG, Assam Rifles Lt Gen PC Nair (Retd). He shared valuable insights on how Major Khathing’s expedition impacted national security and why it remains important today.
John Khathing, son of Major Bob Khathing, spoke at the event and shared fond memories of his father’s life and legacy. His words added a personal touch to the commemoration. The event also featured colourful cultural performances by various troupes that celebrated the rich and diverse traditions of the North-East.
Earlier, in October 2024, Rajnath Singh virtually inaugurated the Major Ralengnao ‘Bob’ Khathing Museum of Valour in Tawang to honor his contributions. The museum stands as a tribute to his courage and dedication to the nation.
