Pune Defence Security: India is going through a very tense situation with Pakistan right now, and because of that, the whole country is on high alert. Just like Mumbai, Pune has also increased its security. Police in the city are being extra careful, especially because Pune is not just any city it plays a big role when it comes to India’s defence system. It has a large number of defence-related places and training centers.
Pune is more than just a city with a big population. It’s home to over ten major defence institutions. This includes famous places like the National Defence Academy (NDA), Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), and also the Southern Command Headquarters, which are very important for the Indian Army. Because of these, Pune becomes one of the key defence locations in India.

According to Freepress Journal, he said, “Pune is on Orange Alert, which means a high probability of a serious security threat or disaster, but not yet critical. The measures taken during such alert include heightened security measures the public is advised to remain vigilant; preparations for emergency response are made.” An Orange Alert means the threat is serious, but not at the highest level yet. Why Pune is So Important in Defence?
There are so many places in Pune that help make India’s defence system strong. These places train soldiers, teach doctors, build equipment, and do research for the future. The College of Military Engineering (CME) in Dapodi trains engineers for the Army. The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) in Girinagar does high-level research under the DRDO and works on things like defence tech. Also, DRDO labs such as the Research & Development Establishment (R&DE) focus on new inventions like robots and missile tech.

The Ordnance Factory in Khadki builds weapons and ammunition that soldiers use. The Military Intelligence Training School & Depot (MINTSD) located in Pune Camp trains soldiers to collect and understand intelligence information. The Southern Command Headquarters in Pune Cantonment is one of the most important army centers in the country and gives orders to many units.
The city also has the Air Force Station in Lohegaon, which takes care of air training and operations. Then there’s INS Shivaji in Lonavala, not very far from Pune, which trains Navy officers in marine engineering. The Defence Security Corps (DSC) keeps defence places safe, and the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Wanowrie trains military doctors and helps with research in medicine.

Even military hospitals in Pune are part of this system. These include Command Hospital in Southern Command, Army Institute of Cardio-Thoracic Sciences, Military Hospital in Kirkee, and the Artificial Limb Centre. All of these work closely with AFMC to support the health of soldiers and their families.
Because of the current situation, every one of these defence institutions has made its security even tighter. When asked about how these places are staying safe, Chavhan explained that, “So every organisation has tightened their security at their levels, even the airports, and I cannot disclose further details.” This means they are all being very careful, and plans are in place in case anything goes wrong.
