Odisha Defence and Aerospace Manufacturing Hub: The Odisha government has approved a very large factory project that will make parts for cars, airplanes, and defence equipment. The decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on January 31, 2026. The project will come up in Dhenkanal district and will be developed by the Kalyani Group. The total investment is expected to be around ₹17,250 crore, making it one of the biggest industrial projects in the state.
The manufacturing complex will be built on about 1,100 acres of land at a place called Gajamara. The State Government said the project will include three main units. Kalyani Steel will set up a specialty steel plant. Saarloha Advanced Materials Private Limited will build a super alloy unit. Bharat Forge will develop a casting and forging unit for industrial components.
Chief Secretary Anu Garg spoke to the media and explained the job impact of the project. She said it will create more than 4,800 direct jobs and around 5,500 indirect jobs during construction and early operations. As more vendor parks and small supporting companies come up later, total employment could cross 20,000.
Importance of the Porject for Odisha
The Odisha government said this project will help the state become stronger in making important materials like titanium and specialty steel. These materials are very important for defence and aerospace equipment. This project will help reduce that dependence and keep more value-added work inside the state.
Because all the units will be located close to each other, companies will be able to share roads, utilities and logistics services. This cluster-style setup is expected to lower costs and improve productivity in Odisha. It will also make it easier for companies to grow faster with less paperwork and smoother approvals.
Officials believe this move will slowly change Odisha’s image from being mainly a supplier of raw materials to becoming a state known for advanced and technology-based manufacturing.
Bigger Plans
In the same Cabinet meeting, the government also decided to continue support for international flights from Odisha. The State approved extending viability gap funding for IndiGo’s international routes from Bhubaneswar to Dubai and Singapore. The government explained the reason clearly, saying,
The defence and aerospace hub also fits into India’s larger goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat. By making more defence items inside the country, India wants to protect itself from global supply problems. Officials said this project supports plans to localise more than 5,000 defence components in the coming years.
The Dhenkanal hub is planned as a full industrial ecosystem, not just one factory. Vendor parks will be built for smaller suppliers along with other important things like good roads, power, water, and special workspaces needed for high-precision defence and aerospace work.
