Defence Innovation: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) organized a major brainstorming session this week, bringing together more than 50 startups and small businesses working in the defence sector. The two-day meeting, held on March 24 and 25 at South Block in New Delhi, aimed to understand challenges faced by these companies and explore ways to speed up innovation in military technology.
Senior officials from the Department of Defence Production, led by Secretary Sanjeev Kumar, had detailed discussions with entrepreneurs and industry experts. Most of the participating companies were part of the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) program, which supports new technologies for national security.
The talks covered several advanced fields, including drones, artificial intelligence, space technology, cybersecurity, electronic warfare, and quantum computing. The goal was to see how these technologies could be used not just for defence but also for civilian purposes.

After the discussions, Secretary Sanjeev Kumar thanked the participants and said, “Your inputs will help us improve policies and make it easier for startups working on high-tech defence solutions to grow.” He added that such meetings would help India become more self-reliant in defence technology, reported by Economic Times.
In a separate but related development, the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) signed an important agreement on March 21 to boost defence research. The deal, signed in New Delhi, aims to use India’s scientific expertise to develop advanced military technologies.
Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Deputy Chief of IDS, and Shri Sunil Kumar, Additional Secretary of DST, signed the agreement in the presence of senior officials, including Lieutenant General JP Mathew (Chief of IDS) and Shri Abhay Karandikar (Secretary, DST).

Under this agreement, the DST will provide defence researchers access to its labs, experts, and academic institutions. The partnership will focus on developing new military technologies and strengthening India’s ability to produce its own defence equipment.
The move supports the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) mission, ensuring that the armed forces get the latest technology while reducing dependence on foreign suppliers. Officials said this collaboration will help India stay ahead in defence innovation and security.
