Yantur Turbofan Engine Programme: Just days after Skyroot Aerospace made headlines with Vikram-1, India’s first privately developed orbital rocket, another private company has stepped into the spotlight. Paninian India Private Limited has now announced the Yantur 4.5 kN Turbofan Engine Programme. The company says this is India’s first privately developed turbofan engine in this class and a big step for local aerospace work. Skyroot’s successful Vikram-1 launch on July 18, 2026, was already seen as a major moment for India’s private space sector. Now Paninian is trying to add new strength on the propulsion side too.

What the Yantur programme is trying to do
The Yantur programme is built around a compact 4.5 kN turbofan engine. Paninian says this engine is meant to power Svayatt L1, its long-range autonomous cruise missile platform. The company also says the platform has been designed to match the needs of the Ministry of Defence’s Make-I programme for the Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile, or LRLACM.
Paninian said the work has already moved past the concept and detailed design stages and is now heading toward subsystem testing, validation and full engine certification. The company’s own Svayatt portal also says the Yantur family is being developed with a modular core and a thrust range of about 3 kN to 12 kN for different autonomous aerial systems.
Paninian has also said the same engine core may later be scaled up to 12.5 kN for its proposed Svayatt CCAV autonomous combat aircraft platform. The company says this would help create a wider family of propulsion systems for future unmanned and autonomous aerospace platforms.
Why the company says it matters?
The company says compact turbofan engines are one of the most important technologies for long-range autonomous systems. In simple terms, these engines matter because they can give missiles and unmanned aircraft the power they need to travel farther and do more. Paninian says building this technology inside India will reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and help the country grow a stronger aerospace manufacturing base. It says the programme supports the larger Atmanirbhar Bharat push in defence and aerospace.

Dr G. Gouda, former Group Director (Propulsion) at CEMILAC, backed the effort and said, “The programme represents an important step towards establishing sovereign Indian capability in compact turbofan propulsion, engine controls, accessory systems, advanced manufacturing and propulsion-airframe integration. It complements the pioneering efforts of DRDO scientists, whose work has laid a strong foundation for indigenous propulsion development.”
The company also says five patent claims have been filed around engine family architecture, combustor and diffuser-nozzle design, compressor technology, digital-twin health monitoring and advanced manufacturing methods.
Paninian founder Raghu Adla said, “Yantur represents a pioneering private-sector effort to build sovereign Indian propulsion capability for future strategic autonomous systems. This milestone belongs to our young engineering team, advisors and partners who have transformed an ambitious vision into a credible engineering programme.” He also said, “We are now seeking strategic support from government, industry and investors to accelerate engine testing, subsystem qualification and full-system validation while helping establish a sustainable indigenous propulsion ecosystem.”
To move the project forward, Paninian has started a US$3 million funding round that will support engine testing, subsystem qualification, full-engine validation and integration with Svayatt L1.

This latest announcement comes right after Skyroot’s launch success, which has given India’s private aerospace sector a big confidence boost. Together, these moves show that private Indian companies are no longer just working on space launches. They are now also moving into engines, propulsion and autonomous defence systems. That makes the country’s private aerospace story look much bigger than before.
