India Maldives defence: India and the Maldives have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their relationship, focusing on a “comprehensive economic and maritime security partnership.” This came during talks between India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Maldivian counterpart Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon in New Delhi. The discussions aimed at enhancing defence cooperation and boosting the capabilities of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
Rajnath Singh expressed optimism about the outcomes, stating, “Today’s discussions will add new vigour to India-Maldives relations.” He also reiterated India’s readiness to support the Maldives in improving its defence preparedness. This includes providing defence platforms and resources in alignment with the Maldives’ national priorities, India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, and the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision.

As per Indian Express, the defence ministry highlighted that both countries remain committed to realizing their shared vision for a stronger economic and maritime security partnership. This partnership was originally agreed upon in October 2023. As a tangible gesture of support, India handed over defence equipment to the Maldives to enhance its security infrastructure.
Singh shared details of the meeting on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Held fruitful talks with Maldives Defence Minister Mr. Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon in New Delhi. Several issues pertaining to deepening defence cooperation were discussed, which would also help in enhancing the capability of the Maldives National Defence Force.”
During his visit, Maumoon praised India’s historical role as the Maldives’ “first responder,” acknowledging New Delhi’s assistance in building infrastructure and training defence personnel. His visit, which extends until January 10, underscores the ongoing high-level engagements between the two nations. According to the defence ministry, these engagements aim to strengthen bilateral defence and security ties for the mutual benefit of both countries and the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The visit follows recent discussions between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Khaleel. These talks marked a thaw in relations, which had faced challenges last year when Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu came to power with an “India Out” campaign. At the time, India had to withdraw over 85 military personnel stationed in the Maldives. Muizzu’s foreign policy also indicated a tilt toward China, adding strain to the bilateral relationship.
Ties have improved significantly since Muizzu attended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inauguration last year. Reflecting on this, Jaishankar noted, “There have been some important and positive developments in bilateral relations since President Muizzu’s visit to India last October.”
