India-Made Viper Sniper Rifle Set to Join Two Police Forces in Major Defence Boost

India-made .308 Viper sniper rifle by SSS Defence will soon enter service with two police forces, marking a major boost for indigenous small arms manufacturing and defence self-reliance efforts.

India Viper Sniper Rifle: Bengaluru-based SSS Defence is close to putting its .308 Viper sniper rifle into service with two Indian police forces. The company’s founder, Vivek Krishnan, called it a long wait and said, “Been 9 years since the @sssdefence Viper was born. It’ll finally go into service with 2 amazing police forces in less than a month,” in a social media post. The two police forces were not named.

This is being seen as a small but big step for India’s push to make more defence gear inside the country. SSS Defence is a domestic original equipment manufacturer, and the Viper has been one of its best-known small arms products for years. The company’s own product page lists the rifle as part of its Indian small arms lineup and says procurement details are available for defence agencies.

What the Company Said About the Rifle?

Krishnan also wrote, “I love the new spirit, it’s infectious. This is not India that apologises, explains or asks permission. It’s unabashedly, unapologetically, unmistakably BHARAT,” and later added, “And we will not change the weapon’s name. It will forever be the Viper. A sticker is not a soul. The honesty of knowing what is yours & what is not is wisdom that the Bhagavad Gita teaches. Some missed that chapter. I pray every day that we have memory of our origin.”

The message was very clear. The name will stay Viper. That matters because the rifle has been built and known under that identity for years. SSS Defence has also described the Viper as its offer for the Indian Army’s sniper rifle requirement, and earlier reporting said the rifle was designed as an indigenous system made in India.

The .308 Viper is a bolt-action sniper rifle chambered in 7.62×51 mm calibre. It uses a 24-inch barrel and comes with either a 5-round or 10-round magazine. The trigger pull weight is listed between 2 and 3.5 pounds. SSS Defence says the rifle can deliver 1 MOA accuracy, which means it is built for very careful and precise shooting. The full length of the rifle is 1,200 mm and its weight is 6.4 kg.

The company also lists a number of add-ons and upgrades for the rifle. These include high-flow-rate suppressors to help cut backpressure and muzzle flash, cold hammer-forged chrome-lined precision barrels for longer life, and modular upgrade kits with drop-in trigger assemblies and handguard systems. It also comes with hard-anodised Picatinny and M-LOK optic rails, so thermal optics and other modern accessories can be fitted easily.
