Agni 5 missile test: India issued a notification for a likely missile test to be held from September 24 to 25 in the Bay of Bengal region. Reports said the upcoming missile will have a range of less than 1,500 km, reported ET. India has already carried out numbers of successful missile tests in the past months.

The Agni-5 is powerful enough to cover almost all of Asia, including the far north of China, and can even reach certain parts of Europe. India also tested short-range nuclear capable missiles recently. Both Prithvi-II and Agni-I were launched successfully just last month, showing steady progress in the country’s missile programme.

Agni-5 Previous tests

On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, India again proved its capability when it successfully test-fired the Agni-5 from Chandipur. The Ministry of Defence released a statement after the launch and said, “The intermediate-range ballistic missile Agni-5 was successfully test-fired from Chandipur on August 20. The launch validated all operational and technical parameters.” Officials confirmed that the test was carried out under the Strategic Forces Command.

The missile tested on that day was a variant of Agni-5. This is India’s indigenously developed intercontinental ballistic missile that can fly as far as 5,000 km. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) designed it for India’s long-term security needs.

The earlier trial of Agni-5 took place on March 11, 2024. At that time, DRDO successfully tested the missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, which lets one missile strike several different targets at once.

Why is Agni-5 Important?

Agni-5 is important because it covers more than 5,000 km, which means both China and Pakistan are within its striking distance. The missile runs on solid fuel, has three stages, and is made to move around easily.

It stays inside canisters that keep it safe from the environment and allow it to be moved by road or rail and fired quickly whenever needed. This design makes the missile more flexible and also harder for enemies to target.
