Halwara Air Force Station: One of India’s Oldest Airbases

Halwara Air Force Station is one of India’s oldest frontline airbases in Punjab, playing a major role in air defence, border security, and rapid response operations for the Indian Air Force.

Halwara Air Force Station

Halwara Air Force Station is a very important base of the Indian Air Force. It is located in Punjab and is one of the oldest air force bases in North India. This base is always active and ready for action. Because of its location near the western border, it plays a big role in keeping the country safe. Fighter planes and air force staff stay ready here all the time in case anything goes wrong.

This airbase has been working for many years. It became part of the Indian Air Force in 1950. Even before that, the runway was used during World War II. Over the years, Halwara has helped India during wars and tense times. It is known as a frontline base, which means it is one of the first bases that can respond fast during danger.

Where is Halwara?

Halwara Air Force Station plays a very important role in India’s defence system. The base is located in Punjab, around 11 kilometers from Ludhiana city and about 200 kilometers away from the India-Pakistan border. Because it is close to the western side of the country, it allows the Indian Air Force to react very fast if there is any danger coming from that direction. Halwara works under the Western Air Command and is used as a forward base, which means aircraft here can be sent into action quickly without delay.

The location of the base is also very helpful. It is close to major roads like the Grand Trunk Road and important railway lines. This makes it simple to send fuel and machines and soldiers to the base whenever they are needed. Because of this easy access, the base can stay ready and well supplied even during serious or risky situations.

Halwara has a long history of taking part in wars. During the 1965 and 1971 Indo-pakistan, aircraft from this base carried out attack missions and defended Indian airspace.

Halwara hosts modern fighter jets like the Sukhoi Su-30MKI. These aircraft were added starting in 2012 and later increased to handle new threats. They help in watching enemy movement, stopping attacks, and striking targets if required.

Airport Plans and Daily Role

Halwara Air Force Station also has a new civil airport project. A civil enclave has been built inside the base. This is planned to become the new international airport for Ludhiana. Once it starts working fully, it will help people travel easily and improve business and trade in the area. The project has taken time, but it is expected to boost the region once operational.

Apart from defence work, the base also manages air traffic and navigation in the area. It helps aircraft fly safely during training and real missions. Roads connect Halwara easily, and people can reach it from Ludhiana by road. The nearest railway station is Ludhiana Junction, and the closest civil airport right now is Sahnewal.
